The Wilmington Choral Society is seeking a skilled, dependable, and collaborative Pianist-Accompanist to support rehearsals and performances for our community choral ensemble. This individual will work closely with the Music Director to provide high-quality accompaniment, assist with musical preparation, and support the artistic mission of the organization.
Position Type
This is an independent contractor position for the term July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, with the possibility of annual renewal.
Position Summary
The Pianist | Accompanist is an important role in the musical success of the Wilmington Choral Society by providing piano accompaniment for weekly rehearsals, sectional rehearsals as assigned, dress rehearsals, performances, and other approved music-related activities. The ideal candidate is punctual, prepared, flexible, and able to work effectively with the Director, singers, and Board leadership as needed.
Primary Responsibilities

Provide piano accompaniments for all scheduled Wilmington Choral Society rehearsals and performances as directed by the Music Director.

Arrive no later than 7:00 p.m. for regular evening rehearsals to allow preparation time with the Director prior to rehearsal.

Be prepared to begin rehearsal promptly; regular rehearsal time is typically 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. weekly.

Provide accompaniment for the Society’s two primary annual performances, including dress rehearsals.

Participate in one required Saturday rehearsal per semester as scheduled by the Board and Director accordingly.

Provide support for sectional rehearsals and related assignments as designated by the Director, with such duties included in the contract.

If needed, provide accompaniment for the scholarship winner when performing with Wilmington Choral Society singers, as included in the contract. This is to include rehearsals as needed and inclusive of final performance in venue as determined and agreed to by the Director, Board and Scholarship Committee.

Work collaboratively with the Music Director and within the policies, procedures, and bylaws of the Wilmington Choral Society.

Maintain consistent punctuality, preparedness, and professional communication.
Qualifications

Strong piano performance and sight‑reading skills,
-
Advanced musical knowledge, including understanding of music theory, rhythm, and harmony.

Demonstrates technical proficiency in piano accompaniment, with the ability to accurately perform complex choral, ensemble, and solo repertoire across a variety of musical genres.

Experience accompanying choirs, vocal ensembles, or community music groups, with the ability to support sectionals and rehearsal needs as assigned.

Excellent team collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with the Music Director, society members, other performers and organizational leadership in a professional, cooperative environment.

Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, fostering positive relationships with performers and contributing to a supportive rehearsal atmosphere.

High reliability, punctuality, and thorough preparation for all rehearsals and performances.

A degree in music or formal musical training is preferred.
Attendance and Substitute Expectations
Reliable attendance is essential. In the event the accompanist is unable to attend a scheduled rehearsal or performance, prompt written notification to the Director and WCS President is expected. The accompanist will also be responsible for securing a qualified substitute, in accordance with WCS policies.
Additional Functions
Additional performances, rehearsals, or responsibilities beyond the regular annual schedule may be offered with Board approval. The accompanist will be given first consideration for such assignments, with compensation determined and agreed upon in writing based on the financial capacity of the organization at that time.
Compensation
Compensation is $4,600 annually, paid in two equal installments following each final performance. Final contract terms and fee adjustments are negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
